THE BELGIAN WAVE

For roughly five months across the winter of 1989 and the spring of 1990, Belgium reported large, silent, triangular objects moving slowly over its towns. What makes the episode unusual is not the sightings, which have parallels everywhere, but the institutional response: the Belgian Air Force scrambled interceptors, released its radar data to civilian investigators, and put a senior officer in front of the press to say it had no explanation. Three and a half decades later, the deflationary account of the same events is also strong, and both halves belong on the page.

HOW IT BEGAN

The wave is conventionally dated from 29 November 1989 near Eupen, in Belgium's German-speaking east, where gendarmes on duty filed reports of a large low-flying object with bright lights. Reports accumulated through the winter. The Belgian ufological society SOBEPS, which collected and catalogued them, ultimately logged on the order of 2,600 reports over the period.

The described object was strikingly consistent: a large dark triangle, moving slowly and often close to silently, with a bright light at each corner and frequently a pulsing red light at the centre. That consistency is regularly cited as evidence the witnesses were describing one real thing. It is also, as sceptics point out, exactly what one would expect once a widely-publicised template exists for people to match ambiguous night-sky observations against.

THE NIGHT OF 30-31 MARCH 1990

The episode that gives the wave its standing in the record began around 23:00 on 30 March 1990. The Control Reporting Centre at Glons received reports of unusual lights, and radar at Glons and at the traffic centre at Semmerzake tracked a target. Two F-16s were scrambled from Beauvechain Air Base.

Over roughly the next hour the two aircraft attempted nine separate interceptions. On three occasions an F-16 obtained a radar lock, each lasting only seconds before the contact was lost. The recorded tracks included changes of speed and position that the crews could not match. The last radar contact was around 00:40 and the aircraft were back on the ground shortly after 01:00.

The single most important fact about the intercept is the one most often left out: the pilots never visually acquired anything. Everything the F-16s contributed is radar data. Meanwhile gendarmes on the ground at Wavre reported four lights in a square formation making short jerky movements before fading out in four directions at around 01:30.

WHAT THE AIR FORCE DID NEXT

Belgium's response is what separates this case from most. The air force compiled and released an official report on the March events, made radar data available to civilian researchers rather than sealing it, and allowed Colonel Wilfried De Brouwer, then Chief of Operations of the Air Staff, to discuss it publicly. De Brouwer's initial working hypothesis was prosaic - that the objects might be an experimental American aircraft - and he pursued it through official channels. The United States responded that no U.S. Air Force stealth aircraft were operating in the area during the relevant periods.

Having ruled out the explanation it expected, the air force did not substitute a better one. It stated that it had been unable to identify the phenomenon and left the matter there. A NATO air force publishing its radar tapes and conceding it did not know is rare enough that the episode is frequently cited in disclosure argument on exactly that ground, independent of what the objects were.

THE CASE AGAINST

The deflationary account has become considerably stronger since 1990, and it is not a fringe position.

On the radar, the most damaging analysis holds that the three F-16 locks were the two aircraft locking onto each other, and that the remaining anomalous returns are consistent with Bragg scattering, a well-understood form of atmospheric interference that produces spurious radar contacts. That account explains both the extraordinary apparent manoeuvres and the total absence of any visual contact from crews flying directly at the target.

On the ground reports, the sceptical case notes that the Eupen reports which opened the wave largely arrived more than a week after the date they describe and following heavy media coverage and public appeals for witnesses - a sequence that makes recall contamination difficult to exclude. Researchers have argued that a portion of the sightings are consistent with helicopters, the reported silence being explicable by the witnesses' own vehicle noise or by wind direction. The broader argument, made by the Belgian critic Marc Hallet among others, treats the wave as a media-amplified social phenomenon rather than a single physical object seen thousands of times.

Then there is the photograph. The Petit-Rechain image, released anonymously in April 1990, showed a black triangle with three corner lights and became the defining picture of the wave; it was examined by outside institutions without any clear evidence of fakery being found. On 26 July 2011 the photographer, Patrick Marechal, admitted on Belgian television that he had faked it, and demonstrated how: a triangle of polystyrene, painted black, with a torch at each corner, suspended on a string. It had been treated as authentic for roughly twenty years.

WHAT SURVIVES

Stripping out the hoax photograph and the contaminated early reports, and granting the radar critique, what remains is not nothing, but it is narrower than the popular version. There was a large volume of independent witness reporting, including from gendarmes on duty. There was a real scramble and a real set of radar returns that the operators found anomalous at the time. And there was an air force that investigated its own event, published the material, ruled out the mundane explanation it had itself proposed, and declined to invent a replacement.

The residue is a case in which the institutional conduct is better documented than the phenomenon. That is a genuinely useful thing for a reader of the current U.S. files to hold onto, because it is the shape a lot of this material takes.

WHY IT MATTERS TO THE U.S. RECORD

Belgium in 1990 is a preview of a pattern the American record keeps reproducing. Sensor data that behaves oddly, no corroborating visual, an official body that cannot close the case, and an evidentiary base that thins considerably when each strand is examined on its own. It is the same structure as the 1952 radar-visual sightings over Washington, covered at 1952 Washington, D.C., and the same structure AARO describes when it reports large numbers of cases resolved and a smaller number that stay open for want of data rather than because of what the data shows.

The black-triangle description also matters for reading the newer files directly: PURSUE Release 05 included FBI digital renderings made from firsthand witness accounts of an "Airborne Triangle" in 2002 and a "Dark Translucent Triangle" in 2023, a reporting shape with a lineage running straight back through Belgium and the 1997 Phoenix Lights.
